January 22, 1936 - August 14, 2022
In loving memory ~
Margaret Bennett passed away on 14 August 2022, dying peacefully in her sleep at Nanaimo Seniors Village after an unwelcomed struggle with Alzheimer's.
Margaret was born 22 January 1936 to Robert and Kathleen Hebron of North Burnaby. She grew up there, attended local schools and added lessons in piano, elocution and acting. She was an active youth member of St. Nicholas church and a Job's Daughter. Her recreation included tennis, skiing and figure-skating.
After graduation from North Burnaby High, Margaret pursued a degree from UBC School of Nursing, a program that led to an RN credential and, in 1958, to her BScN. In 1970 a scholarship opportunity at University of Hawaii provided her MScN in psychiatric nursing.
Margaret was very much a nurse; she compiled a rich record of experience in the field in over a half-century of practice. Her work included teaching, clinical practice, management, and community and home nursing. She taught first in 1964 and last in 2010, and along the way she was tenured at University of Victoria and McMaster University. She held clinical management positions at the former Hamilton Wentworth Region and at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial hospital (Halifax).
Away from work Margaret enjoyed participating in the remodeling of our homes. She was a skilled drywall taper/finisher and interior/exterior painter. Gardening was also a passion.
Margaret is survived by Bert her husband of 64 years; her children Rob (Carolyn) of Victoria and Tracy (Steve) of Hillsboro, Oregon; grandchildren Sean and Shannon Bennett (Victoria) and Jess and Tom Herbert (Nashville, Tennessee); and her brother Robert Hebron (Carol) of Maple Ridge.
The family thanks the staff of Nanaimo Seniors Village for the care and support given Margaret over the last twenty months. She requested cremation and that no service be held. Donations in her name may be made to the research programs of Alzheimer's Society of Canada.
