Sooke’s recent decision to support a proposal from the District of Metchosin to ban tanker ships during adverse weather conditions is a commendable step in safeguarding our coastal environment.

This motion aims to prevent tanker travel when spill response teams cannot operate due to rough seas and is an essential call for enhanced safety measures along B.C.’s coast.

While some council members expressed skepticism about the ban’s effectiveness, it’s crucial to recognize the broader context.

Sooke has a history of advocating against increased tanker traffic, with a 2014 referendum reflecting widespread community opposition to oil tanker expansion. The impending completion of the Trans Mountain pipeline doesn’t negate the need for ongoing vigilance and preparedness.

The proposed ban is a proactive approach to mitigate potential disasters, as Coun. Tony St-Pierre rightly pointed out that it won’t eliminate tanker traffic but will ensure tankers only operate when it is safe.

Sooke’s appeal to B.C. Environment Minister George Heyman for support from Transport Canada and provincial assistance is a significant stride toward disaster prevention and preparedness.

Sooke sets an example for others to follow as one of five local governments requested to back this ban.

The Trans Mountain Expansion project’s expected increase in oil tanker traffic heightens the need for adequate spill response capabilities. Investing in tugboats and response bases is a step in the right direction, reflecting a responsible approach to managing the risks associated with the project.

In a time when environmental concerns are paramount, Sooke’s stance is a testament to its commitment to protecting its shores, marine life, and the livelihoods of those who depend on its pristine waters.

This motion shows Sooke’s commitment to protecting its coast. We commend the council for their leadership.
