As a parent of two elementary school-age children in Oak Bay, I am deeply concerned about the potential cuts to funding by School District 61 for school counsellors at Margaret Jenkins and Willows elementary schools.
The proposed cuts to funding for school counsellors come at a time when our children need support more than ever. The ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated mental health issues among young people, with many experiencing heightened levels of stress and uncertainty.
We are in a mental health crisis at the moment. Doctors in our community are reporting significantly higher numbers of children being diagnosed with mental disorders like ADHD and anxiety and families struggling.
Now, more than ever, we must prioritize the mental health and well-being of our children by ensuring they have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
Margaret Jenkins and Willows schools are hubs of our community, where children come to learn, grow, and discover their potential. Cutting funding for school counsellors undermines the fundamental mission of our schools to nurture the holistic development of every child. It sends a message that their mental health is not a priority, which is unacceptable and short-sighted.
As parents, we must unite to voice our concerns and advocate for the needs of our children. We cannot stand idly by while essential services are stripped away from our schools, leaving our children vulnerable and unsupported.
I urge fellow parents, community members, and elected officials to join in opposing the proposed cuts to funding for school counsellors at Margaret Jenkins and Willows schools
