The Saanich Braves visit the Victoria Cougars at Archie Browning Sports Centre on Thursday as the rival Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League teams will face each other twice in two nights.
Puck drop is 7 p.m. Thursday.
On Friday, the teams travel up Tillicum Road for a 6:30 p.m. face-off at Pearkes arena.
The Braves have acquired forwards Kurtis Coburn and Ryan Friesen, former KIJHL players, and goaltender Brandon Ward from the Nanaimo Buccaneers.
The struggling Braves are winless in seven games (0-6-1), a streak which actually dates back 24 regular season games to Jan. 3 of last season.
The defending VIJHL champion Cougars, meanwhile, are 5-1-1, second in the South division behind the Westshore Wolves (7-2).
Mount Doug Rams demolish the Irish
A 19 point run in the third quarter propelled the Mount Douglas Rams senior boys football team to a 31-14 victory over AAA Western Conference rival Vancouver College Fighting Irish at Langford’s Goudy Turf on Friday.
The Rams are now 2-0, having defeated the Notre Dame Jugglers 36-7 in Week 1.
“The fortitude and perseverance of the Rams was on display after Van College grabbed momentum with a late second quarter touchdown,” said head coach Mark Townsend.
Seye Farinu and Jesse Woollard led the Rams offence to a total of 264 yards rushed with 89 and 85 yards, respectively.
Gavin Cobb also scrambled for 59 yards on the ground and had two touchdowns. Quarterback Joe Clarke threw 12 of 19 passes for 109 yards and a TD strike, while Ross Faulkner had six receptions for 54 yards, one of them a 20-yard touchdown catch. Farinu was massive on defence with nine tackles. Jonah Merino had five tackles plus a fumble recovery.
Next up is the New West Hyacks, 2 p.m. Friday at Mercer Stadium in New Westminster.
Former Rams star Marcus Davis, a UBC Thunderbirds rookie, earned Canada West Player of the Week on Sept. 29.
Davis totalled 253 all-purpose yards in a 49-13 win over the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday, including a 98-yard punt return to set up UBC’s first score, a 43-yard touchdown reception and a 36-yard touchdown rush.
Vikes soccer sniper nets brace of braces
Fourth-year striker Emma Greig scored twice in each win as the UVic Vikes women’s soccer team took 6-1 and 5-0 victories from the UNBC Timberwolves on Sept. 27 & 28 in Prince George.
The Vikes are now 5-0-1 in Canada West play. The Vikes men won 2-1 and 1-0 over UNBC and are 5-1.
This weekend the Vikes host UBC Okanagan Oct. 3 and Thompson Rivers on Oct. 4.
Women play at 5 and men at 7:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
