Saanich auto racer Bill Okell will spend Canada Day south of the border where he’s qualifying for a strong starting position in this weekend’s Sports Car Club of America race at Sonoma Raceway, north of San Francisco.
Okell is in the midst of a successful season, having won two races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series at Monterey in Laguna Seca four weeks ago.
Okell will race in two events on Sonoma’s 2.5-mile hillside circuit, Saturday and Sunday.
A good finish this weekend will leave him in a strong position to qualify for the year-end Pacific Coast Road Racing Championships, in late October, at another NASCAR track, Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. (northeast of Los Angeles).
