If the latest polls are to be believed, the move is on target with a majority of Canadians. A survey conducted by Research Co. from Sept. 2 to 5 found that 79 per cent of British Columbians support a handgun ban in their municipality, and 86 per cent support a ban on military-style assault weapons.

This fall in the electoral reform referendum, British Columbians will be asked whether they wish to switch from first-past-the-post to an electoral system of proportional representation. They will then be asked to rank three different proportional representation systems: Mixed-member proportional: Rural-urban proportional; and Dual-member proportional.

The statue of Canada’s first prime minister, John A. Macdonald, was removed from outside Victoria City Hall on the weekend. Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said Macdonald’s role in the creation of residential schools was a painful reminder for the city’s Indigenous population. It seems like forever since we last saw a downpour that this part of the world is so famous for. So how is your lawn holding up? POLL: Should Saanich ease restrictions to allow more secondary suites?

Saanich currently permits secondary suites in most but not all urban areas of the municipality subject to a dozen conditions as described on Saanich’s website. But the actual number of legal suites (a few hundred) appear to be far below the potential suites (some 9,000). Do you think Saanich should do more to accommodate secondary suites in the district?
